1) Start from the Inside


It is easier to spot leaks from the inside than outside. Look at the walls and ceilings for any signs for darker discoloration. Also, if the walls and ceilings have spots on them it means there are leaks. However, it might not be directly above the area where the discoloration appears because water can take any path.


2) Get Up in the Attic


To find leaks in rubber roof, you will eventually need to get up in your attic. When in the attic, go where you saw the water stains on the ceiling or wall. Use a searchlight to locate water stains on wood or to find wet insulation which can be challenging task.


3) Follow the Trail


Once you have found where water is coming from the next step is to follow the trail to find the actual cause of leak. In some cases it can be a puncture and in some cases it can be damage part of the membrane. Remember water follows the path of the least resistance and runs down the hill.


4) Inspect the Top for Damage


It is very vital to get on the roof and inspect the situation. Getting on the roof is always a dangerous proposition so be careful and ensure your safety first. While on the roof find areas which you believe are center for possible damage like a puncture membrane, missing caulking or a damaged flashing.
